Smoke Free Status of Indoor Public Places, Workplaces, and Public Transport
All indoor workplaces
The law permits designated smoking areas in indoor workplaces. Therefore, the regulatory status code “Smoking is Restricted” is given.
To align with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines, the law should prohibit smoking in all parts of indoor workplaces.
All indoor public places
The law permits designated smoking areas in indoor public places. Therefore, the regulatory status code “Smoking is Restricted” is given.
To align with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines, the law should prohibit smoking in all parts of indoor public places.
All public transport
The law permits designated smoking areas in most means of public transport. Therefore, the regulatory status code “Smoking is Restricted” is given.
To align with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines, the law should prohibition smoking in all parts of public transport.
Government facilities
The law does not specifically address government facilities. However, the law restricts smoking to designated smoking area in facilities to which the public has access. Because the public has access to government facilities, these restrictions apply to government facilities.
To align with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines, the law should prohibit smoking in all parts of government facilities.
Private offices
The law does not specifically address private offices. The law restricts smoking to designated smoking areas in facilities to which the public has access, and it is possible that this provision applies to private offices. Childcare facilities/preschools
The law restricts smoking to designated smoking “in facilities intended for child care, school activities and other activities for children or youth,” which includes childcare facilities and preschools. However, these designated smoking areas must be accessible to staff only.
To align with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines, the law should prohibit smoking in all parts of childcare facilities and preschools.
Primary and secondary schools
The law restricts smoking to designated smoking “in facilities intended for child care, school activities and other activities for children or youth,” which includes primary and secondary schools. However, these designated smoking areas must be accessible to staff only.

Bars/pubs/nightclubs

Designated smoking rooms must be designed and ventilated so that smoke does not spread to other parts of the service area.

Trains, buses and other shared ground transportation other than taxis
The law permits designated smoking areas in most means of public transport. The law specifically prohibits smoking in sleeping cars on trains.
To align with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines, the law should prohibit smoking in trains, buses, and other shared ground transport.
Taxis (for-hire vehicle)
The law permits smoking in designated areas in most means of public transport. However, because it is not be possible to designate a smoking area in a taxi, the law is interpreted as prohibiting smoking in taxis.
The law aligns with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines with respect to taxis.
Commercial aircraft
The law permits smoking in designated areas in most means public transport. However, in practice, all airlines in Sweden prohibit smoking on domestic and international flights. Therefore, the regulatory status code “100% Smoke Free” is given.

Commercial watercraft
The law permits designated smoking areas in most means of public transport, which includes commercial watercraft.

Public transport facilities (waiting areas for mass transit)
The law permits designated smoking areas in public transport facilities.
