Post signs
(e.g., seizure of the product, publication of the violation/violator)
The law imposes a duty upon the person responsible for a public or work place or means of public transport, to post clear and prominent notices regarding the prohibition of tobacco smoking. A violation of this duty (which does not constitute a criminal offense) is subject to a written warning for the first violation, and a written warning and a fine for the second violation. For additional offenses, a registration certificate or license may be suspended or revoked, depending on the circumstances.
The law aligns with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines with respect to the duty to post signs.
Remove ashtrays

The law imposes a duty upon business owners/employers/supervisors to remove ashtrays. A violation of this duty (which does not constitute a criminal offense) is subject to a written warning for the first violation, and a written warning and a fine for the second violation. For additional offenses, a registration certificate or license may be suspended or revoked, depending on the circumstances.
The law aligns with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines with respect to the duty to remove ashtrays.
Steps to require a person to stop smoking (e.g., warn, discontinue service, call authorities)

The law imposes a duty upon business owners/employers/supervisors to take steps to require a person to stop smoking, including discontinuing service. A violation of this duty (which does not constitute a criminal offense) is subject to a written warning for the first violation, and a written warning and a fine for the second violation. For additional offenses, a registration certificate or license may be suspended or revoked, depending on the circumstances.
The law aligns with FCTC Art. 8 and the FCTC Art. 8 Guidelines with respect to the duty to take steps to require a person to stop smoking.
Not to smoke where prohibited
The law imposes a duty upon smokers not to smoke where prohibited. A violation of this duty is subject to a fine of 1,000.00 Birr.
