Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Notification on Health Warnings
COMMENTS: Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Notice, April 21, 2009, on Health Warnings provided the text, size and placement requirements for tobacco health warnings. These requirements have since been replaced by those contained in the Tobacco Control Act, 2016 and the Tobacco Control Regulations, 2019.
Tobacco Control Act (Commencement) Order, 2018
COMMENTS: The Tobacco Control Act (Commencement) Order, 2018 establishes December 17, 2018 as the effective date of the Tobacco Control Act, 2016.
Tobacco Control Act, 2016
COMMENTS: The Tobacco Control Act, 2016 regulates smoke free places; tobacco product packaging and labeling; tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; restrictions on the sale of tobacco products; disclosure requirements; and tobacco industry interference with tobacco control policy. The commencement date was established by the Tobacco Control Act (Commencement) Order, 2018.
Tobacco Control Regulations, 2019
COMMENTS: The Tobacco Control Regulations, 2019 were issued under the Tobacco Control Act, 2016. The Regulations contain implementing details related to health warning contents, sales restrictions, disclosure requirements, smoke free places, and enforcement, among others.
Technical Guidance for Implementation of Pictorial Health Warnings and Message on Tobacco Products
COMMENTS: The Technical Guidance was sent to all tobacco manufacturers, importers, distributors, and sellers to assist with implementation of picture health warnings. Guidance includes information on submitting samples for approval.
Notification of Commencement of Graphic Health Warnings and Messages on All Tobacco Products for Sale in The Gambia
COMMENTS: The Notification was sent to all tobacco manufacturers, importers, distributors and sellers, to notify them that they have three months from the date of the Notification to implement picture health warnings as required under the Tobacco Control Act, 2016. Thus, picture health warnings were to be required on packs beginning January 6, 2021. However, this date was subsequently delayed to September 6, 2021.
Extension of Dates for Implementation of Graphic Health Warnings and Messages on All Tobacco Products for Sale in The Gambia
COMMENTS: This letter was sent by the Ministry of Health to all tobacco manufacturers, importers, distributors, and sellers to notify them of an eight-month extension of the implementation date for picture health warnings. The date was moved from January 6, 2021 to September 6, 2021.
