Health Warnings/Messages Features
Combined picture and text warnings must cover at least 50% of the front and back of the packaging, on the upper portion of the package. For conical packages, warnings must cover at least 50% of the surface area, in a rectangular format. Warnings must also be printed on any inserts or onserts.
The six warnings issued are required to be used simultaneously over a period of 18 months. Each warning includes both an image and text.
The law meets FCTC Art. 11 with respect to minimum size, placement, and rotation.
Although the packaging and labeling provisions of the law apply to tobacco and tobacco products, the regulations only prescribe warning requirements for cigarettes. Smokeless tobacco is not on the market in Suriname.
To align with FCTC Art. 11 and the FCTC Art. 11 Guidelines, the availability of smokeless tobacco in Suriname should trigger the enactment of regulations prescribing appropriate warning requirements.
